Kinder Sheds New Light On Designs This Market

HIGH POINT, NC – – – Widely acclaimed artist and designer Carolyn Kinder believes timeless design can manifest itself into almost any form of furniture, wall décor, or decorative accessory. And now lighting too. Thomas Lighting couldn’t agree more. The $80 million, Louisville, Ky based lighting manufacturer is The Kinder Collection’s newest licensee. This market in High Point, Thomas chandeliers are part of new Kinder design ensembles for Montaage accessories and The Uttermost Company wall décor.

Although a portable lighting collection featuring Kinder designs is on the drawing board at Thomas, the company’s primary business is lighting fixtures – mass marketed in giant home improvement chains such as Lowe’s and The Home Depot. So why is Thomas part of a design collection presented to furniture retailers at a residential market? Therein lies the philosophy of Carolyn Kinder.

In her world, everything in the home is related. The chandelier is in the same room with the mirror, thefurniture, the sconces, the vases, the oriental rug, the crystal and the window treatments.

And when buying for this room, this “environment”, the consumer shopped in a series of different stores to pull it together. A furniture store was just one of these stops.

“We must understand the same consumer who shops at XYZ furniture also goes to the fabric store, the home improvement store, the carpet and wallpaper store, watches the home shopping network, and orders from catalogs,” said Kinder. “We’re talking about the SAME consumer.”

In her world, manufacturers will work together; cross promote; and share consumer databases. And that’s exactly what she’s encouraging her licensees to do. A brochure is being developed for The Kinder Collection featuring coordinated ensembles from all three licensees – Montaage, Uttermost, and Thomas Lighting. This brochure will be included in every package. For example, if a consumer unpacks her Uttermost mirror, this brochure shows her how to complete her ensemble with a Montaage accessory and a Thomas lighting piece. Phone numbers will direct the consumer to the nearest Thomas and Montaage dealers.

In Kinder’s world, consumers will be comfortable and secure when decorating their homes. With the help of her licensees, she envisions a series of videos that will educate consumers and give them confidence to achieve their own individual sense of harmony, warmth, fashion and style.

Kinder believes there are 8 laws that are basic to achieving the goals of a quality environment for a particular individual or family. Each video will be comprised of one of these laws. The videos will be available for $9.95 or free with purchase at every retailer who carries The Kinder Collection. They will also be announced through publicity efforts to newspapers and shelter magazines.

“The videos will be strictly educational in nature,” says Kinder. “They are not a sales pitch, and they don’t direct the consumer towards anyone’s products. They are designed to create consumer buying confidence, which can’t do anything but help our home furnishings industry as a whole.”

The Kinder Collection can be seen at the Montaage Showroom, IHFC H324, and The Uttermost Company Showroom, IHFC C448.

Carolyn Kinder will be available for interviews throughout the Market.
